Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1958, Stuart Raymond’s life story is as colourful—and as cosmopolitan—as his cuisine. The boy who would grow into one of Canada’s leading chefs was drawn to the kitchen early. His first mentor was his parents’ cook, a former executive head chef, employed to facilitate the extensive family home entertaining necessitated by Raymond’s father’s position as a senior executive with the South African branch of the Ford Motor Company.But tragedy marred his young life. Both his parents died when he was just 11. After enlisting in South Africa’s Permanent Military Force at the tender age of 16, the future chef opted to oppose his country’s military and racial policy by “voting with his feet.” He deserted the South African military and moved to London, England, the country of his father’s birth. But immigration difficulties dogged him, and another move, this time to Israel, followed. Read full story » |
